From Hamstring Pain to Unlimited Options: Phil’s Story at Made 2 Move Charlotte

“It wasn’t super painful — just that nagging, chronic pain.”

“My name is Phil and I was dealing with some hamstring pains. Back in December I was doing a lateral lunge, felt something pop, and it didn’t feel great. It wasn’t super painful — just that nagging, chronic pain that was always there.

I kept training, running, doing all the things. I thought it would just work itself out. I didn’t think it was bad enough to see somebody, but the longer time went on I realized this is something I need to get looked at.

I tried to fix it on my own. I did hamstring exercises and strength work. I could do hamstring curls, but when I did RDLs, when I would hinge, I felt that tightness. I bootlegged my own little plan, but it’s tougher to follow through by yourself. A week goes by, two weeks go by, and it never happens.

I’m a fitness coach — personal training and group classes. Exercise and movement is super important to me. When I feel good with my workouts, that translates to all other aspects of my life. I’m a better friend and a better coach. The pain was limiting me. I wasn’t at my top level, and I wanted to get it fixed so I could give more to others.”

“It wasn’t super painful — just that nagging, chronic pain.”

“That blew my mind.”

“I met Emily when she came in and took a class — instant vibes. We started talking about physical therapy and what she does right next door. Life brought me to this person and here I am. Honestly, I probably wouldn’t have gone through with it if the connection wasn’t there with her.

First session, I came in thinking it was my hamstring. After a bunch of tests, Emily realized it wasn’t the hamstring — it was my lower back and how those two things are connected. That blew my mind. The more we talked about it, the more it made sense.

Even coaches need coaches. Having someone to guide me gave me accountability. I knew I was going to get one-on-one attention — not just ‘do this for 15 minutes while I help someone else.’ We had great conversations, great laughs. I actually wanted to come back and do PT.

I felt improvement after one or two sessions. On RDLs, not only was I able to go heavier, but my range of motion improved. I did RDLs yesterday — right back to where I was prior to the injury. I can plan my workouts without hesitations or limitations. My routine is more balanced now.”

“Now I have unlimited options.”

“I like to dabble in a lot of fitness activities — boxing, kickboxing, soccer, sports. With a few of those, I wasn’t able to do them before coming here. Now I have unlimited options. I can do whatever I want. I can do what makes me happy. I’m not spending energy worrying about whether it’s going to hurt or limit me.

Don’t be skeptical. Just come in for a session. You won’t know unless you try it, and I guarantee you’re going to love it. You’ll want to keep coming back and that’s going to lead you to success. Everybody goes through fear of the unknown — ‘Am I going to get along with this person? Am I going to look stupid doing these exercises?’ What’s the worst that could happen? You show up once and it’s not for you. But I guarantee that’s not going to happen here.

Thank you to Emily and to the Made to Move team. You helped me get back to doing what I love. You’ve made me a better, happier person, and now I’m able to share that with others.”
