From Hip Pain to Marathon Success: Madison’s Story at Made 2 Move Charlotte

“I was five weeks out from the Chicago Marathon and spiraling.”

“I’ve been running for a while, and this past year I got accepted into the Chicago Marathon. I was running a bunch of miles but not really strength training. Then I started having this right-sided hip pain. I’d had it before, but when I amped up my mileage again, it came back.

I tried to run through it, but about five weeks out from the marathon it got a lot worse. I was spiraling. I thought, I need to do something right now or else I’m not going to be able to run the race at all.

I asked in my run club group chat if anyone knew of a physical therapist, and someone gave me Emily’s contact info. I signed up for the free phone consult, and then came in for an assessment. We made a plan, stuck to it, and I ran the Chicago Marathon in my goal time, pain free.”

“Within a week and a half, my pain was starting to go away.”

“I’d tried to solve it on my own before — I stopped running, looked up different hip exercises online, but I was doing the wrong stuff. When I saw Emily, we realized it wasn’t just my hip flexor like I thought — it was more adductor-related. She changed my plan, and that’s when things started improving.

From the start, everything felt individualized. The first assessment was over an hour where we just talked through my story, my pain, and made a plan. That stood out to me because years ago I was referred to group physical therapy, and it never felt like it was specific to the person. This was completely different — one-on-one, trial and error until we found what worked.

I saw her once a week until the race. Within a week and a half, my pain was almost gone. By the time I got to the race, it was completely gone. I ran the whole thing pain free.”

“I’m back to doing what I love most.”

“Crossing that finish line was amazing. I had been so worried, but instead I ran pain free in my goal time. Since then, Emily and I have worked on strength training so I can prevent future injuries, get stronger, and get faster. Now I see her once a month, she individualizes my workouts, and I’m running without pain.

It was honestly mind-blowing. I remember thinking, this is too good to be true, but it worked. Emily made me feel so comfortable, and I trusted her right away.

I would definitely recommend Made 2 Move to a family member or friend. I was so sad when I thought I couldn’t run, and now I’m back to doing what I love most. Everyone here is amazing — it’s such a good environment. I’m just really thankful.”
