PHYSICAL THERAPY

When Claire first came in, she felt stuck and frustrated. She was dealing with ankle pain that made running impossible.

Even walking downstairs and standing at work as a professor was painful. Biking to work wasn’t any better.

Resting hadn’t helped, and the pain was limiting her day-to-day life, so she came in for an appointment!

Fast forward to now, and she:

✅ Runs multiple 5Ks a week and recently hit her longest distance ever — 5 miles!
 ✅ Feels stronger and faster than ever
 ✅ Has the tools and knowledge to stay healthy and pain-free long-term

👀 You’re NOT causing irreparable damage to your rotator cuff when you lift your arm.

🤠 Tissues getting squished is normal, not dangerous, and not inherently a reason for pain.

‘But what the heck is sciatica?’

Sciatica is a common umbrella term people use to describe symptoms, pain, weakness, numbness, or tightness in the back of their leg, glutes, feet, or back.

It can be super frustrating and scary to experience!

2. Decrease your symptoms — calm sh*t down

3. Address causes and underlying weaknesses, limitations, or irritating factors

We’re here to give you a long term solution — not a quick fix. We’ll figure out what led to this issue, and we’ll help you solve that — for good.

As physical therapists, we see a loooot of people come in months — sometimes YEARS — after their original injury.

The problem is: when it comes to soft tissues injuries like muscle strains and ligament sprains, traditional injury advice delays recovery, doesn’t address what caused the injury, and leads to more chronic issues down the road.

Yup. You read that right. The things you’ve been taught to do are actually NOT helpful.

As physical therapists, we see a loooot of people come in months — sometimes YEARS — after their original injury.

The problem is: when it comes to soft tissues injuries like muscle strains and ligament sprains, traditional injury advice delays recovery, doesn’t address what caused the injury, and leads to more chronic issues down the road.

Yup. You read that right. The things you’ve been taught to do are actually NOT helpful.

That’s super frustrating, right?

Especially because the way you treat these injuries can make a huge difference between a full recovery versus struggling with this for 5-10 years

You’re not alone — but back pain doesn’t mean you need to stop working out (in fact, that’s one of the worst things you can do…)

High intensity / high volume workouts can put a lot of stress on our backs, and while that stress is NOT a bad thing by itself, it can lead to pain/injuries when we do TOO MUCH too soon or more than we’re prepared for — especially if we’re doing a lot of repetitive movements without specifically strengthening our backs in training

From a meniscus tear to running a half marathon 🏃🏻‍♀️

When Katie first came in, she felt frustrated, stuck in a cycle of pain, and unsure how to move forward.

She had been in the best shape of her life after training for a Half Ironman, only to have everything come to a halt after feeling a pop on a run.

She tried injections, stretching, seeing her ortho, and person training before coming to see us — but wasn’t seeing progress.

She felt lost — training had been a huge part of her identity. She wanted a plan that actually worked and fit into her life as a mom and she really wanted to avoid surgery.

Fast forward to now, and she:

✅ Just ran a half marathon without pain!

✅ Is back to running and strength training pain-free

✅ Working towards qualifying for Boston and doing more triathlons

Boy was I WRONG.

My calves felt tight and I could feel the “knots”

I thought that if I got rid of that, my pain would go away.

As it turns out...

Those feelings and “knots” were just SYMPTOMS of the overall problem.

They were my body’s attempt to deal with the problem and they showed up BECAUSE of the problem. These things weren’t causing my pain.

This is a super common mistake I see now as a PT — people often treat the symptoms (the effect) instead of the problem (the cause):

People are told to stretch, foam roll, and smash out the areas that hurt or feel tight.

But a LOT of times, the knots/tightness is a sign of overload (placing more force/stress on those tissues than they can tolerate/adapt to) especially when it comes to tendons.

You may simply be rolling out your calves because you like the way it feels, and if so, keep doing you.

But here’s some of the exercises that helped me ⬇️

Start light, slow, and with 1-2 sets. See how you feel the next few days, repeat, and progress as you improve.

Single Leg Deficit Calf Raise
* If this is too much, start with both feet, or go up on 2 and down on one

Forward Step Down / Heel Tap
* Great for ankle stability, eccentric calf loading, and overall single leg stability - add a weight if need to make more challenging and focus on getting your knee over your toe

Floating Heel Split Squats
* The isometric hold can be a good place to start if your calves are a bit cranky - you can get some loading without as much stress.

Knee extension can be challenging to get back after an ACL tear/repair

The biggest mistake we see is athletes not working on their extension enough, not doing challenging exercises, OR once they get full extension, they stop working on it, only to lose it again

Full extension is something you have to CONSISTENTLY work on (way more than 1x week) and it’s super important for the function of your knee — whether you’re trying to get back into playing sports at a high level, working out, or just living everyday life
