My Hot Take on Stretching (Yes, I'm a Physical Therapist)

"They told me I just need to stretch more."

Is my [insert pain here] because I don’t stretch enough?"

"My PT says my [body part] is tight and that’s why my [other body part] hurts."

As a physical therapist in Charleston, I hear versions of this every single day. And honestly?

Here’s my (slightly spicy 🌶) take:👉 Stretching is not the universal solution to pain and injury. 👈

Wait, What?! A PT Saying Stretching Isn’t the Answer?

I know—it might sound a little wild coming from a physical therapist. But after years of experience (and personal trial and error), I’ve realized that stretching is one of the most over-applied, over-prescribed treatments in rehab.

Let me be clear: I’m not saying stretching is bad.

I’m saying it’s often misused, overused, and rarely addresses the real reason people are in pain.

"You're Just Tight" Isn’t a Diagnosis

Way too many people have been told that their pain is due to “tightness.”Then they’re handed a printout of a few generic stretches and sent on their way.

No deeper evaluation. No real plan.

Just: “Come back next week and we’ll do the same stretches again.”

And guess what? Months (or years) later, they’re still in pain.

At Made 2 Move Charleston, we believe you deserve way more than that.

Pain deserves a real diagnosis, a personalized approach, and a plan that actually makes you stronger and more resilient—not just more flexible.

Here’s the Truth About Mobility and Injury

If you have a mobility restriction (meaning your joints can’t reach the positions required for your sport or life), then yes—mobility work should be part of your rehab.

But mobility is just one piece of the puzzle.

Most injuries don’t happen because someone is “too tight.”They happen because your tissues (like muscles and tendons) weren’t prepared for the force or stress placed on them.

It’s a strength problem, not a stretching problem.

A Real-Life Example: Runners with Calf Pain

We see this a lot in our Charleston physical therapy clinic—runners with calf pain who were told to do a couple of 10-second stretches and "ease back into it."

Here’s the kicker:

The calf experiences 6–7x your bodyweight in force during running.

A light stretch isn’t going to cut it.

To truly fix the issue (and keep it from coming back), you need to:

  • Strengthen the calf to handle those forces

  • Improve load tolerance

  • Build long-term durability

Stretching might feel good for a moment, but it won’t create lasting change if strength is the missing piece.

Most People Don’t Even Have a Flexibility Problem

You’d be surprised how many people feel “tight” or get injured, yet test with perfectly normal range of motion.

Feeling tight isn’t always the same as being tight. Sometimes it’s a protective signal from the nervous system—or even just weakness.

That’s why we assess and treat differently at Made 2 Move Physical Therapy in Charleston. We go beyond stretching to get to the real root cause of pain and injury.

Strength > Stretching

Think of your muscle like a building material.

If you’re trying to build a house that can withstand storms, do you:

  • Pull and tug at the straw walls to “loosen them up”?…Or…

  • Replace the straw with bricks?

You need to build stronger tissue, not just make it more flexible.

That’s why most of our rehab plans focus on progressive strength, load management, and real resilience-building, not just a quick stretch and a foam roller.

The Bottom Line

Stretching has its place.

But if you’ve been stretching every day and still dealing with pain?If your plan hasn’t helped you actually solve the issue or get stronger? If you’ve been told to “just stretch more,” but you’re still frustrated?

It’s time for a different approach.

At Made 2 Move, we work with active adults, athletes, and weekend warriors who want real solutions—not just temporary relief. Whether you're a runner, lifter, yogi, or CrossFitter, we’ll help you figure out what’s actually going on and give you a plan to fix it.

I recently looked into Assignments4u.com reviews and found a mixed bag. Many students share positive feedback—offering timely delivery, polished work, and responsive customer service—which speaks well to their commitment to meeting deadlines and maintaining academic standards. On the flip side, there are concerns: some customers mention late deliveries, incomplete work, or challenges with refunds. Given this mix, it’s best to proceed cautiously. Read recent reviews, ask for sample work, and check refund policies. Doing so helps you make an informed decision and avoid surprises.
