Dr. Matt Shiver, PT
Physical Therapist, CSCS
Born and Raised in Charleston, SC. Matt attended Bishop England High School where we played football and discovered his passion for performance based physical therapy. Matt had a devastating ACL injury that required reconstruction and physical therapy. During that time, he started to realize that when he did deadlifts and squats his recovery was improving. The 3 sets of 20 leg press he was doing in traditional rehab was just not cutting it. He began researching training methodologies and quickly came across CrossFit. He started to implement this training into his rehabilitation and noticed tremendous improvement.
Matt attended Appalachian State University where he studied Exercise Science and Nutrition. While he was at Appalachian he discovered the sport of weightlifting. By his senior year he had directed two local weightlifting meets and founded the Mountaineer Weightlifting Club.
After graduating from Appalachian State Matt moved back home before starting PT school and trained for a bodybuilding show. Yep, the show where men are in speedos flexing on stage with bronze tanner and oil! This taught him a whole new level of discipline. It gave him a greater respect for nutrition and what you are do when you set your mind to a task.
Matt attended Physical Therapy School at Duke University. While he was there he was the Head Barbell Coach at Bull City CrossFit. There he coached CrossFit athletes, weightlifters, and powerlifters to improve their technique and performance on the platform. During this time, he was a competitive weightlifter himself. He competed in a hand full of local meets as well as the Arnold Sports Classic in 2017.
Matt also worked as a Remote Strength and Conditioning Coach for Mash Elite Performance while in Physical Therapy school. He has experience working with National Level Weightlifters and Powerlifters, competitive CrossFitters, active/reserve military, and every day gym goers. He really likes getting people STRONG.
When not in clinic, Matt works with Effective Fitness as their Head PT and Coach with the goal of making First Responders more EFFECTIVE at their job.
